Pantai Cenang
This is Pantai Cenang!

Pantai Cenang is said to be the most “happening” place at night on the island; much like Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, I think. This is where people come to wine and dine, to shop, or just to laze around on the beach. When you first arrive at Pantai Cenang, you wouldn’t know there’s a beautiful beach here, despite its name, because it is hidden from view by a row of shops. However, the authorities are in the midst of changing the layout of the area by moving these businesses to the other side of the street, putting the shoreline in full view of visitors.

The name Pantai Cenang, or Cenang Beach, is derived from the Malay word, “tenang”, which means “calm”. As the main Langkawi island is surrounded and protected by 98 other islands, the beaches here are somewhat calmer, indeed.

We spent almost two hours in this area, so I took the opportunity to walk the length of Pantai Cenang (the business side) and also spent sometime by the beach. It was rather quiet that day as it was a workday. On weekends and holidays, beachgoers would be busy participating in water-sports where there are many being offered, from wake-boarding to jet skiing, kayaking and para-sailing, just to name a few activities.

Interestingly, if strolling isn’t your cup of tea, there are some proprietors here who offer bicycle and motorcycle rentals. Make sure you follow local traffic rules, though!
