When I was planning my solo trip to KL, I overlooked Petrosains. It was only during the trip, while visiting Aquaria and PETRONAS Twin Towers SkyBridge that I included a visit to Petrosains at the last minute, just before my train left for Ipoh, my hometown.

Unwittingly, I thought that it would be my maiden visit to Petrosains. I had totally forgotten that I had been there before, as a volunteer at a ‘A Day With Philips Monitors’ programme in early December 2017. It was only when the elevator door opened at Level 4 of Suria KLCC that I instantly recognised Petrosains, The Discovery Centre and recalled my first visit. It was OK, though, as this time, I got to explore Petrosains more in-depth, compared to previously when I was too busy keeping an eye on the 30+ kids.

Petrosains is a Science Discovery Centre that provides a rich and stimulating environment to enhance science literacy and passion for scientific knowledge in young minds, similarly as useful for adults.

The journey through Petrosains, The Discovery Centre begins with a ride on the iconic oil-drop-shaped Dark Ride. Taking visitors through a dark tunnel, trippers are introduced to Malaysia’s rainforests, mountains and underwater scenery via an audio visual presentation.

A tour of Petrosains concludes via the Dark Ride as well. However, this time, it is known as the Exit Ride, whereby visitors are taken out of Petrosains through another audio visual presentation that captures the hopes for a better Malaysia.

Visitors to Petrosains are free to “play” and indulge in the many interactive exhibits, ‘cos being hands-on (or learn through play) is a fantastic way to absorb information, gain new knowledge and also learn to make sense of science in different aspects.

Petrosains covers a total exhibition area of more than 7,000 square metres, occupying Levels 4 and 5 of both Tower 1 and 2 of the PETRONAS Twin Towers. If you actually go through each and every exhibit, it would take some 4 hours to complete the tour. You are allowed to spend time exploring or take a break at the in-house Molecule Café.

I appreciated the crew members stationed around different sections of Petrosains, who are always eager to share their knowledge with visitors. Then, there are regular science shows that we can participate in. Just look out for the schedule.

During my recent visit to Petrosains, it was a very busy time due to school trips and a workshop there. As you can see, Petrosains, The Discovery Centre is one of the most popular places for school children to tour as they get to learn in a fun and exciting manner outside the four walls of a classroom. In fact, there are creative science workshops organised for primary and secondary school students, among other programmes.
