Karnival Penjaja Ipoh 2010 (1Malaysia Fabulous Food)
Karnival Penjaja Ipoh 2010 (1Malaysia Fabulous Food), organised by Tourism Malaysia and MCA Ipoh Timur, kicked off last evening at 6pm and officiated by Perak EXCO member, Y.B. Dato’ Dr. Mah Hang Soon, who represented the Menteri Besar of Perak. The venue of the event is at Rainbow City Hawker Stall or more popularly known locally as “Thong Sui Kai” (糖水街 Dessert Street) facing Sam Tet Primary School (SRJK Sam Tet).
There are about 50 new hawker stalls set up for this carnival and if we include the regular hawker stalls along Tong Sui Kai and those at the Man U food court, we easily have more than a hundred hawker stalls. My, what variety of food!
There was a traffic jam on my way to the venue and by the time I arrived, the lion dance already started. It was then followed by speeches by V.I.P.s. I didn’t stay to listen to what they have to say as I couldn’t understand their speeches in Mandarin. Instead, I went to survey the food stalls.
Although this is supposed to be a “hawker carnival”, there are other vendors as well, promoting laptops (gasp!), high speed internet and household cleaning products. Also, not all the food stalls can be considered “hawker” food; for example, white coffee and sushi.
Anyway, after checking out the food, I couldn’t find anything exceptional. These are common hawker food, after all, and we get them in Ipoh easily, cheaply. However, this is surely the place to come to if you are looking for variety. This event only lasts for three evenings, though.
