While travelling around Malaysia, I have been to a number of water villages. Two that came to mind were in Tanjung Piai and Pulau Ketam.

When my co-delegates and I were in Labuan to explore the tourism products of the Federal Territory, we were taken to check out Kampung Patau-Patau 1, a water village of Bruneian Malay community.

By the way, ‘patau’ is the Brunei Malay word for ‘bouy’. Aptly named, if I may say so, as the village literally floats on water.

Although Kampung Patau-Patau 1 is no longer traditional, as some of the houses are modified to concrete homes that we now find in cities, this water village is still very much a tourist attraction. After all, not many people have seen how families can live in wooden houses built on stilts over water.

As said, a number of these houses are contemporary, equipped with air-conditioning and cable TV. Meanwhile, some homeowners have cultivated their own garden; the lack of land does not deter them.

Have a look at my photos. If you visit and in luck, you may even get to enter one of these houses for a personal tour.
