While Muslims and some of my non-Muslim friends are fasting during this Ramadan, I am hanging up my wok for the month as I go around eating out to savour delightful Malay fare, be it from Pasar Ramadan or halal eateries and restaurants as well as cosy hotel cafés.

It is not often that I partake in Malay food. Moreover, it is not always that one could get selected dishes that are only available during this holy month.

One of my recent meals was at the coffee house of Symphony Suites Hotel. I realised that it has been six months since my previous visit and so I decided to drop by.

Symphony Café like other halal eateries in Ipoh, is running a special buka puasa promotion until July 2, 2016. Offering kampung-style cuisine especially for this season, there are seven sets of menus served on daily rotational basis.

8. main courses (clockwise from top left): sotong goreng kunyit, ayam masak merah, daging masak kicap & lamb varuval

Starting with soups, there is a different type being served every day: sup ayam berempah, sup kambing berempah, sup daging, tom yum putih, tom yum merah, sup sayur and sup tulang rawan. As I abstain from beef, I was glad that my soup was chicken soup….for the soul.

These photos enclosed were taken during my dinner there, which means that the food served were from one of the daily menus. I believe I managed to photograph about 80% of the dishes only because it was a rather extensive buffet spread.

If you were to ask me which was the best main course, I am unable to choose just one. I love my food spicy, period. By the way, there is a live action stall every day serving a different item daily, including laksa, mee rebus, Nyonya laksa, tom yum and more.

While the F&B team is led by Executive Chef Kenny Lim, chef de partie Rohany Amany Shalini has been given the opportunity to showcase her creations, many that have been incorporated into the daily menus. Chef Kenny is mighty proud of his charge’s ability to take on such a heavy responsibility.

Then there is the grill counter that makes a daily appearance, offering a varied spread of grilled items such as lamb, fish, sausages and cockles. Cucur udang, for those who can’t do without their dose of fluffy prawn fritters, is also available nightly.

Oh yes, before I forget, one advantage of dining here at Symphony Café is the complimentary WiFi. Isn’t it great that you can upload all your awesome photos instantly without having to leech a connection somewhere else or eat up your mobile data? I can say that not many hotels offer this privilege to diners.
