Ipoh’s Live Fresh Seafood Steamboat
An opportunity took my family and I to Gunung Rapat, Ipoh, last evening, and we decided to have steamboat (hot pot) for dinner. We are not familiar with that area but what initially drawn us to Super Taste Steamboat Restaurant was its spaciousness.
I must say, what an excellent choice we made to dine at Super Taste as the restaurant offers live fresh seafood, and the pork/prawn dumplings, fish/meat balls and even sauces, were made by resident chef, Angie, herself. She may not be professionally trained in cooking but what diners are getting from her is domestic-style cooking with quality intact but with the tasty standards of commercial cooking. One doesn’t need a certificate to show when one cooks from the heart.
Diners have a choice of two soup bases – plain and spicy tom yam. We chose plain soup because tom yam soup is too common while plain soup, it was explained to us, is a soup boiled with a multitude of ingredients for five long hours. It is free from monosodium glutamate (MSG) or any artificial food seasoning. Ah, healthy eating for once!
There are five meal sets, with price ranging from RM35 for two pax and RM99 for up to ten pax. In addition to a value set, my family also ordered two dishes à la carte. One was the restaurant’s signature dish, chilli fried crabs, a recipe from Angie’s mother, and the other was soy sauce stir fried prawns.
Other specialities of the family-run Super Taste Steamboat Restaurant include Causeway Bay spicy fried crabs (Hong Kong-style), Thai-style fried pork trotters, black bean lala clams fried bee hoon (rice vermicelli), seafood/crab porridge and drunken lala clams soup. And I must mention this – there’s free flow Nestle ice-cream available to all diners! Yum!
This Chinese New Year, Super Taste Steamboat Restaurant is running a 2-in-1 Steamboat and BBQ promotion from 22nd to 29th Jan, 2012. This means that diners get to enjoy the best of two worlds: fresh seafood steamboat AND barbeque (satay, fish, lamb, etc.). Price is RM28.80 nett (adults) and RM18 nett (children/seniors). Reservation required.
