Ipoh Car-Free Day: World Thinking Day

At the 38th edition of Ipoh Car-Free Day yesterday morning, the theme for the event was “World Thinking Day”. The main highlight was initiated by Kohijau, to think before we throw; basically, to promote the three Rs of reduce, reuse and recycle.

According to Ipoh City Council Planning & Development Senior Director, En. Zulqarnain Mohamad, the Ipoh Car-Free Day programme has multiple objectives, including achieving a Sports City status, lower carbon footprint and to promote a healthy plus green lifestyle by fostering environmental awareness.

Among the Sustainable Development Goals as stated, to be achieved are:

i. Cities 2030, Cities for All: Implementing the New Urban Agenda (The Ninth Session of the World Urban Forum: 7th – 13th February, 2018);
ii. Leave No One Behind (National Planning Congress in conjunction with World Town Planning Day: 29th November, 2018);
iii. Our Own Town (Local Authorities Enhancement Convention: 10th – 11th December, 2018);
iv. Our City, Our Responsibility

Among the governmental and non-governmental organisations that participated in this Ipoh Car-Free Day were Persatuan Suri & Anggota Perkhidmatan Awam Malaysia (PUSPANITA), Pusat Aktiviti Warga Emas (PAWE), BOMBA, Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM), Perak State Health Department, KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital, Malaysia Interaction Culture Association (MICA), Daybreak Association, Ipoh City Watch, and Tun Razak Library.

Besides the usual sporting activities held, such as boxing, aerobics, cycling, and human table football, yesterday’s event was an opportune time to promote the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, an annual international invitational men’s field hockey tournament to be hosted in Ipoh from 23rd to 30th March, 2019.

If you have been wondering about the dates for Ipoh Car-Free Day in 2019, they are tentatively on 24th March, 28th April, 23rd June, 28th July, 25th August, 22nd September, 27th October, 24th November, and 22nd December. The event takes a break in May for Ramadhan.
