Ipoh’s 2024 Chinese New Year Musical Concert Announced

Ipoh City Mayor Y.Bhg. Dato’ Rumaizi bin Baharin@Md Daud announced the 2024 Chinese New Year musical concert during a press conference at the Amphitheatre, Laman Sejahtera, Taman D.R. Seenivasagam, Ipoh, this morning.

The concert, to be held for the first time, is scheduled for 8th February 2024 at 8:08 pm at the Amphitheatre.

Also present at the press conference were Cllr. Tuan Wong Kar Keat, Head of WHIP MBI Council Member; Puan Normala binti Latiff, Ipoh City Council Community Director; and Tuan Ir Ts. Arif bin Mohd Zainudin, MBI Works & Building Director.

This Amphitheatre was built on 1st July 2021 and completed on 1st March 2023. The project, situated next to a manmade lake, was carried out to utilise the open space of Taman D.R. Seenivasagam.

The Amphitheatre is an open stage and can accommodate up to 800 spectators. It is suitable for entertainment and art shows in line with the recognition of Ipoh as a City of Music by the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) on 31st October 2023.

The Amphitheatre is a focal point for music and art lovers to promote performing arts and become a new tourist destination for local and foreign visitors.

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture has channelled an allocation of RM250,000 to upgrade and improve the lighting around the Amphitheatre area, including in the island area facing the Amphitheatre, to create a more comfortable and safe environment for visitors at night. This upgrade is being carried out and is expected to be completed before the Chinese New Year musical concert.

YB Tuan Nga Kor Ming, through the National Landscape Department, Ministry of Housing and Local Government, has also agreed to channel an additional allocation of RM500,000 towards Ipoh City Council’s allocation of RM250,000, making it a total of RM750,000.

This additional amount is for upgrading the landscape at RM250,000 and lighting at RM500,000 around Taman D.R. Seenivasagam, including the Amphitheatre area.

Chinese New Year Musical Concert

This musical concert is the brainchild of YB Tuan Nga Kor Ming, Minister of Housing and Local Government, in conjunction with the Chinese New Year 2024 celebration, alongside inaugurating the lighting and boat activities.

The aforementioned concert is expected to attract an audience of 8,000 people. Various activities and performances will be held, including dragon and lion dance, traditional dances, Chinese orchestral music, and also a fireworks display. Food trucks are available to sell delicious food and drinks.

The existence of the Amphitheatre will become another platform for artists and performers in Ipoh City to promote their talents and works of art.
