Gopeng Heritage Trail: Hup Teik Soy Sauce Factory
The air filled with thick wafts of soy sauce was what greeted visitors as soon as they were in the area of Hup Teik Soy Sauce Factory. Located just behind the Gopeng Police Station, Hup Teik Soy Sauce Factory is a must-visit destination when visiting this humble tin mining town in Perak.

Over the years, I have dropped by Hup Teik numerous times, not so much to purchase their popular homemade soya bean preservative-free products of soy sauce, thick soy sauce and soy bean paste, but for content.

Hup Teik Soy Sauce Factory is always busy, especially during festive seasons, when Gopeng sons and daughters return to their hometown to visit family. However, as part of the Gopeng Heritage Trail, the cottage business at Kampung Rawa welcomes guests all the time.

Even though the business is in its second generation now, manufacturing the soya bean products is still done in the traditional method, with no plans to upgrade to modern technology. The reason is to preserve the original quality of Hup Teik products that all of Gopeng folk have known.

Believing that the weather and environment are two major factors that determine the quality and tastes of the soy products, the production has been kept as-is since the business was founded. Still using original earthen pots that were brought over from China, each cycle of fermentation is about three months to naturally brew the soy sauce. Due to wear and tear, only about a hundred such pots are still in use.

Word of mouth has indeed spread this traditional Hup Teik brand far and wide, with customers coming from as far as Singapore. During my visit, a family from Petaling Jaya was filling up their car boot with their haul.

As we are still in the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) phase, we can only Travel Domestic Cuti-Cuti Malaysia. So, this is one of my recent Backyard Travel destinations. What about yours?
