As a new contributor to Google Crowdsource, I took the opportunity to participate in my first Malaysia meetup-cum-photowalk, on 24th August.

It was quite a tough decision to make, as the programme clashed with my trip to Terengganu. Anyway, I chose Crowdsource over a long trip to the East Coast, and I have no regrets.

Google Crowdsource Malaysia Meetup & Photowalk was hosted by Community Manager Reshma Sanghvi, and the programme was as follows:

Lunch at Pappa Rich, NU Sentral
LRT from KL Sentral to Pasar Seni
Walk to Central Market Kuala Lumpur
Walk to Kuala Lumpur City Gallery
– Goodbye, till we meet again –

The objective was to get to know fellow contributors, offer feedback on how to improve the programme, as well as to curate as many photographs as possible, and upload these to Google Crowdsource over the next two months, for Share Your World Campaign.

While Google Crowdsource is not a new programme, even tech savvy people might not have heard about it. Contributions to Google Crowdsource actually help the Google machine to learn what is right and what is not. When as many people as possible teach Google machine, Google improves.

At least six Google products benefit from this community work, including YouTube, Google Maps, Google Images and Google Translation.

All these effort is voluntary work, of course. I often receive queries why I do something for free when I can utilise my time for something that’s more productive. I believe that as a daily Google user, it is my responsibility to help Google improve so that other users around the world will enjoy a better experience.
