Dazzling Handmade Lanterns Light Up Ipoh Parade’s Mid-Autumn Celebration
Ipoh Parade provided a platform for the youth to showcase their creativity by organising, together with Lions Club Ipoh City, a Lantern Making Competition, where school children were invited to create lanterns out of recyclables.
The participants in the “green” lantern making initiative were divided into two groups: Primary School Students (Group A) and Secondary School Students (Group B).
With assistance from teachers and parents, the children learnt about the art of creating lanterns, as well as the importance of recycling, as they collectively kept the tradition of lantern-making alive in conjunction with Mid-Autumn Festival.
For their effort, the winners in both groups walked away with cash prizes and winning certificates. Besides local school children, pupils from Zhongshan Chinese Primary School also joined in the fun by creating fifty lanterns.
In the evening, the children paraded around the mall, dazzling the streets with their handmade lanterns. The activity indeed reconnected the children and shoppers to their heritage roots of Mid-Autumn Festival.
Other side activities to celebrate the Moon Festival included lion dance demonstration, cultural dances and diabolo performance.
