CNY Reunion: Celebrating Family Joy Of Togetherness

Chinese New Year is a wonderful opportunity for families to get together. After all, for many families, it is only a once-a-year occasion.

Although the modern generation may skip making a trip home for Chinese New Year, or would rather spend the “holidays” on an overseas vacation, traditionally, people do not mind braving the miles, crowd and traffic just to be home for this auspicious gathering.

Ushering in the Lunar New Year is meaningful with family over a scrumptious meal but it is more special and memorable when celebrated with ninety-nine other families.

This was what happened last evening at Syeun Hotel, which organised a Chinese New Year reunion extravaganza for the seventh consecutive year.

As we sat down for the most important meal of the year, we were entertained by stage performances that included festive signing and dancing.

Needless to say, dinner began with the customary prosperity toss, also known as “lo hei yee sang”. It was “tossed” simultaneously by 100 families, with gusto, as you can imagine!.

The interesting line-up of entertainment ensured that the evening remained joyous and merry throughout the meal, which kicked off with a humorous dance by a chicken mascot, to mark the beginning of the Year of the Rooster.

Our excitement went up a couple of notches when the God of Prosperity made an appearance, spreading wealth to diners! Huat ah! May the Year of the fiery Rooster be a prosperous one for all of us!

Enjoying a sit-down course dinner amongst family members during Chinese New Year is certainly an unforgettable occasion but doing so with ninety-nine other families, including those from other races, is another level of festivity altogether.

It is heartening to see this inclusiveness among Malaysians, irrespective of race and religion. When we eat together, we stay together, as the saying goes.
