With a combination of stress, heat, dehydration and sleeplessness from the Swiss-Garden Beach Resort Damai Laut Food & Fun Hunt, I did not look my best when I was holidaying in Lumut. Who would, with volcanoes erupting on her face?

Luckily, accompanying me on my holiday was a local friend, Cheong, who is like a human GPS in Sitiawan. He took me to this rather obscure bird’s nest shop, and ordered a bowl of sea coconut bird’s nest for me. Hahaha… Cheong is a traditional guy despite his youth and he believes in the age-old beauty secret of bird’s nest.

I’m glad to say that it really worked. I had never believed in the effectiveness of bird’s nest but after that, I am starting to look for bird’s nest shops in Ipoh. Hahaha!

We stopped at City A1 Nes for lunch, so bird’s nest wasn’t the only item we had. By the way, if you had wondered at the peculiarity of the name ‘City A1 Nes’, it is pronounced as ‘Sitiawan Nest’ if you read it fast.

By the way, this eatery is located at the back portion of an optical shop, owned by the same boss. That’s why I said that it is in a rather obscure location that one could easily overlook.

Dining at City A1 Nes, I also had the opportunity to watch workers clean up bird’s nest that had been freshly harvested from “bird hotels”. It was interesting as I never understood how it was done. Plenty of work entailed, now I know.

I noticed that besides ready-to-drink bird’s nest, City A1 Nes has for sale raw bird’s nest that we can prepare ourselves. Some people even prefer to buy those that have bird feathers in them, as this reflects the authenticity of the nests. Personally, I prefer the ready-to-drink bird’s nest as it saves me the hassle of preparing it myself.

As Chinese New Year is just around the corner, City A1 Nes has prepared gift hampers for sale, priced from RM338. It would make a really luxurious gift for those who know how to appreciate the value of bird’s nest.

  2. Hahhhah I super like that they went funky with their name… and despite being more of an Indian…I always liked having bird’s nest…

  3. I tried this kind of soup in Palawan called Nido Soup made of bird’s nest. They say its good for health and rich in protein.
