I was first introduced to Bonsai and Suiseki ten years ago, while malling at Kinta City. There was a Bonsai & Suiseki Exhibition at the time. Two years later, I came across something similar but then for the next eight years, I did not have the chance to visit any Bonsai or Suiseki exhibition in town.

Bonsai, if you are not aware, is a Japanese technique of plant cultivation in containers or pots that depict the shape and scale of full-sized trees. You may refer to Bonsai as mini trees, even though they are not real trees.

Where there is Bonsai, there is usually Suiseki. These are naturally occurring rocks of various sizes, traditionally appreciated by the Japanese.

Influenced by Chinese scholar’s rocks, these were small rock objects brought to Japan from the Chinese Imperial court as gifts during the reign of Empress Suiko.

Suiseki are expressive rocks found in nature, with special shapes, colours and textures. These rock forms are original and not reshaped, although the base is usually cut flat for it to stand. Suiseiki are presented in two ways: on a wooden base or in a waterproof tray made of ceramic or bronze.
