Batam Trail Run 2019
Challenging 5 kilometres distance of natural rocky paths, slippery 45-degree slopes and steep uphill climbs were what awaited the approximate 1000 participants of the inaugural Batam Trail Run last Sunday.
Despite the physical test that laid ahead, the runners from as young as 10 years old, and of various fitness levels good-naturedly signed up for the trail run, with IDR77 million worth of cash and sponsored prizes up for grabs.
Batam Trail Run 5km was organised with the co-operation from Team Tebing Langit and Karang Taruna Kota Batam, to boost sports tourism in Batam, Indonesia. Indeed, the exciting event managed to attract an estimated one thousand entries not only within Indonesia but also international runners from Malaysia, Singapore and Kenya (East Africa).
Wow, what a morning it was at Sijori Resort & Spa Batam, to kick start the first-ever trail run on the island. It was teeming with joyful people. There were serious runners, as well as entrants who participated solely for the experience.
As host of the inaugural event, Sijori, a wellness resort, whole-heartedly rendered support to improve the fitness level of staff and guests, enthused the property’s General Manager Yves Van Cautenberg during a pre-event press conference.
Prior to the flag-off of the run that passes through the highly picturesque Tebing Langit (Sekupang), guests were treated to traditional dance performances, as well as an energetic cheer-leading routine by Ligers Cheerleaders from SMAN 16 Batam, to pump up the energy.
There were two categories for the run, i.e., children (2.5km) and adults (5km). Top spots in the adult category were swept by runners from Kenya, expectedly. Nonetheless, it was a personal challenge for most of the participants, rather than winning the race.
