Authentic Javanese Cuisine @ Sego Pecel Bu Wir, Batam, Indonesia
During my recent visit to Batam and Bintan, whereby I was to provide coverage for Batam Trail Run (5km) 2019 as well as to explore the tourism attractions of the two islands, I did not know what to expect from this maiden trip.
The delegation of media members, including yours truly, was invited to a 9-month-old restaurant that serves authentic Javanese cuisine. Founded by Dimas Samuel H., who is originally from Yogyakarta (Jogjakarta) on Java island, Sego Pecel Bu Wir at Batam Center’s Mega Lagenda serves the healthiest pecel komplit, eaten with rice and secret recipe peanut sauce.
This healthy dish can’t be more authentic. Pecel is like a salad of fresh vegetables that the Javanese people traditionally have for breakfast and/or lunch simply for the fact that it’s easy to prepare, fresh and most of all, economical.
It’s interesting to learn how Dimas involved himself in the food & beverage business by chance at the tender age of 16. Living in Singapore then, where his dad was a hotelier, his mom used to prepare authentic Javanese dishes at parties and potlucks. The food was excellent, so much so that friends encouraged her to go commercial. The impetus motivated her to establish an eatery on the third floor at Lucky Plaza in Singapore.
After 12 years, the family decided to sell the business. It was time to move back to Indonesia, anyway, and Batam was chosen as their new home. This relocation meant that the locals and tourists to Batam could now similarly enjoy authentic traditional Javanese food at Sego Pecel Bu Wir without going to Java, some two hours away by flight.
Besides its signature item of Pecel Komplit, the eatery also serves a wide range of dishes, similar to our “economy rice” meal concept. This Halal restaurant is open from 7am to 5pm (WIB) and until 8pm (WIB) on Fridays and Saturdays.
