Au Young the Magician

Au Young the clown is a popular figure in Ipoh and its surrounding areas. Who hasn’t met him yet, or posed with his clownish Volkswagen Kombi van?

While most of us know Au Young as a clown, do you know he is also a magician? I had the opportunity to watch his magic show for the first time when he performed a comedy magic show as the God of Prosperity at Ipoh Parade one recent afternoon, in conjunction with Chinese New Year.

Although I have watched some of these magic routines before by other magicians, Au Young held his own during the 30-minute show, delighting his audience, young and old. Au Young may not be a master illusionist, yet we couldn’t figure out how the tricks were done. Ah, that’s why it’s called a trade secret!

Au Young invited spectators on stage, which they gleefully did for the chance to watch Au Young perform his magic close up. Au Young, being a clown first and a magician second, kept the audience in stitches throughout the show with his funny antics, like when he pulled a fake banana out of the pocket of a guy.

Whether as a clown or magician, or both, Au Young is clearly the live wire of the party that every host needs.
