5 Pro Tips to Visit PETRONAS Twin Towers (KLCC SkyBridge)

The PETRONAS Twin Towers are the world’s tallest twin structures, standing at 88 storeys each. This iconic landmark is known around the world and visitors to Kuala Lumpur, or KL in short, for the first time should take an obligatory photo in front of the towers. Coming from Ipoh, I was no exception, but that was many years ago.

However, looking from the exterior, I had dreamt of visiting the SkyBridge one fine day. That one day turned into months and years, and I somehow did not manage to make a tour. That was until recently, I said to myself, “Heck, let me just play tourist in KL for a couple of days, in order to visit some KL landmarks that I had always wanted to.”

So, that was how my trip to PETRONAS Twin Towers Skybridge materialised. Visiting the SkyBridge at KLCC needs a bit of planning, though. We all know what a popular tourist attraction the PETRONAS SkyBridge is, far more following Sean Connery’s and Catherine Zeta-Jones’ scene in the Hollywood blockbuster, Entrapment.

A trip to PETRONAS SkyBridge sees visitors grouped according to their colour-coded tags in order to keep the groups small and manageable. Each group is briefed on the safety aspects of the tour first, and then taken on the high-speed elevator to the 42nd floor of the tower, where the SkyBridge is located. Every batch of visitors is allocated ten minutes on the 42nd floor (SkyBridge) after a short introductory overview of the attraction.

At the end of ten minutes, more than enough time to personally witness the spectacular Kuala Lumpur cityscape from SkyBridge and capture photos. Visitors then take another trip on the elevator to the 86th floor of the eastern tower, where the observation deck is situated. Extra time is allowed here, as there’s information to read, souvenirs to buy, postcards to send out, and of course, more photographs to be taken.

Having been on the tour, finally *phew*, let me share five pro tips to tick PETRONAS SkyBridge off your bucket list.

1. Beat the queue
Buy your tickets online, if you can. I was told by a foreigner that online tickets seem to be more expensive compared to those sold over the counter. I am not sure how true this is as usually, online tickets are discounted. Perhaps he did not look hard enough.

In any case, there are tickets that ought to be purchased at the counter, and those include MyKad and MyKid tickets, concession tickets, as well as tickets for visits within the next 24 hours. Tickets, subject to availability, are purchased at the PETRONAS Twin Towers Ticketing Counter on the Concourse Level.

2. Have a flexible schedule
Visits to the SkyBridge at KLCC are conducted 15 minutes apart, from 9am until 9pm daily, except Mondays and Hari Raya Aidilfitri & Aidiladha. Tickets are sold throughout the day. Similar to bus and train services, we buy the tickets hoping to be included in the earliest batch.

Sometimes, it could be a short 30-minute wait, at other times, the allotted time could be a few hours away. Therefore, it is a good idea to have a flexible schedule and head over to visit Aquaria, Petrosains, or shop at Suria KLCC, in the meantime. You will be in the same area, and yet won’t waste time just waiting for your turn. I also understand that SkyBridge tours are halted whenever the weather is unfavourable.

3. Time your visit
A Twin Towers SkyBridge tour is best scheduled during off-peak days, e.g. during workdays or non-holiday (Malaysian and international) seasons. You certainly don’t want to waste time waiting for your turn, or have way too many people photobombing your shots.

4. Golden hour tour
Now that you know the best days to visit, what about the best hour? It would be, in my personal opinion, during the golden hour. Perhaps a 7pm time slot should be most suitable, in order to be at the summit, either the SkyBridge or observation deck at around 7.20pm. Do take note that the lastest admission is 8.30pm.

5. Don’t go alone
I was by myself when I visited KLCC SkyBridge. I equipped myself with a tripod and selfie stick, imagining all the good shots that I would get without troubling anyone. Bad idea, as these are prohibited items!

Oh uh! I had to keep them away at the counter. In fact, bags, prams and other large/heavy/sharp objects are not permitted. We are given a number to collect our belongings when the tour wraps up. Anyway, it is advisable to visit KLCC SkyBridge with at least another person so that both can assist each other to shoot those obligatory photographs!

So, are you ready to visit KLCC SkyBridge yet? Read more about it from the official PETRONAS Twin Towers website. This is also where you can purchase your tickets in advance (for non-Malaysians).
