23rd SAS Cup 2014: Day 4 – Australia (7) – South Africa (0)
Despite an impressive scoreline, in the first half of the game, Australia missed a lot of opportunities to score. The South Africans managed to hold off the mighty Aussies but their defence broke after 30 minutes. From then on, it was Australia all the way, scoring again at the 34th and 35th minute via Jamie Dwyer and Nicholas Budgeon respectively.
Australia head coach Ric Charlesworth, who would be retiring after the Commonwealth Games this July, said the team had to physically push themselves, after a full game barely 24 hours the day before.
Aussie Captain Mark Knowles, playing down the wide scoreline in many of the team’s games at this tournament, said that it’s not so much how many goals they scored, but the team’s performance in each game.
Australia has thus far scored a total of 20 goals and conceded none, topping the tables with a maximum of 9 points. Meanwhile, South Africa has lost all 3 games they have played.
