23rd Ipoh City Day Celebrations

The official title of this event is actually: Karnival Sambutan Hari Bandaraya Ipoh Ke-23…. my, aren’t there too many ‘karnivals’ already this weekend?

Ipoh achieved city status on 27th May in 1988 but the carnival to celebrate its 23rd anniversary is only held this weekend from 3rd to 5th June, 2011. I went to Dataran Bandaraya Ipoh this morning to see what was in store. I was quite surprised that there was no crowd at all. I think everyone has gone to see Upin and Ipin!

There was a 3-on-3 Basketball Championship going on but I had no idea which team was against which team so I just stopped by to get a photo. There was also a display of Volkswagen Beetles and Kombis from a local Volkswagen Club. Read this post.

As said, I expected more visitors, more things to see, but maybe it was the wrong time of the day, or even the wrong day but the booths that were open could be counted on one hand. Most of these are government agencies like Jabatan Imigresen (Immigration Department), Suruhanjaya Pencegahan Rasuah (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission) which we know better as SPRM or MACC, Jabatan Tenaga Kerja (Labour Department), the Police and Yayasan Bina Upaya Darul Ridzuan.

Perhaps the “bang” would come later this evening before the celebrations wrap up at 11.30pm tonight. I won’t be going a second time to find out.
