Australia vs. New Zealand was a much-anticipated match as it would decide Malaysia’s fate in the tournament. However, the first half was rather dull because the two teams know each other too well.
Australia has a young and inexperienced team and despite having possession of the ball and chances at the penalty corner, they were just not finishing. New Zealand, on the other hand, has more experienced players, but a smaller pool to choose from.
It started to rain in the second half, and Australia, as though with a new strategy, scored three successive goals. The game, unfortunately, was disrupted by heavy rain with only 21 minutes on the clock.
The resumption of the game saw New Zealand converting a penalty corner, and henceforth, the Black Sticks stepped up the pressure, trying to draw level to no avail, despite Australia’s failure to maintain their earlier intensity. Australia is through to the finals, while New Zealand will feature in the bronze medal playoff.
Final score was Australia 3, New Zealand 2. View (and buy) high quality photos of this match at Sports Media Group Australia.
