2014 Chap Goh Meh & Valentine’s Day Mass Wedding
It is double celebration for the 52 couples who choose today to tie the knot. It is a most auspicious and significant day, with Yuan Xiao Festival coinciding with Valentine’s Day.
Yuan Xiao, or in Hokkien, Chap Goh Meh which means “the 15th night”, is also known as “Chinese Valentine’s Day”.
What better day to get married on this day, which only happens once every 19 years? I bet all these grooms would have no problem remembering their wedding anniversaries in years to come!
The ceremony, held in front of family and friends, started at 10am sharp, according to a fusion of Eastern and Western marriage rites.
Assistant Registrar of Marriages, who is also the association’s President, Dato’ Ooi Foh Sing, delivered a lengthy speech on the sacrament of marriage, of family harmony and the importance of health.
Most of all, he reminded the newly-weds of the trials and tribulations of every parent in bringing up their children. It was a timely reminder to these future parents that it is going to be a heavy responsibility to take on! Remember, parents always leave the best for the kids!
Having attended numerous mass weddings here, I must admit that I have listened to this “sermon” many times but each time is just as meaningful as the last. One can never get bored, even if one isn’t getting married then!
I believe my photos today show the entire proceedings of the morning. Everyone looked very happy but for the brides and their grooms, it’s just taking the first step in their married life together. Nevertheless, congratulations to all of you!
