One of the more prestigious chess tournaments in Perak, it was sponsored by Kuala Lumpur Kepong Berhad (KLK) and organised by Persatuan Catur Negeri Perak, formerly known as Perak International Chess Association.

With the objective of making chess accessible to all, the Tan Sri Lee Loy Seng Perak Grand Prix Chess Championship is a 5-leg tournament, where competitions were held earlier this year in Sungai Siput, Bagan Serai, Kampar and Slim River, before wrapping up in Ipoh.

Players had to accumulate points over these five legs, where the one with the most points will win the championship. Only competitors who had participated in at least three of the five legs will qualify for a prize.

deep in concentration

Chess is a sport that sharpens the mind as one has to visualise the different positions that may happen two or three moves later and from there, analyse the possible counter moves, something that is not seen on the board, within a matter of minutes. Strange as it may seem for chess, one has to be physically fit as well, not only mentally, because a chess tournament like this one takes eight hours to complete.

To improve on one’s game, it requires more practice, a good coach and frequent participation in tournaments.

Thanks to a sponsored tournament such as this Tan Sri Lee Loy Seng Perak Grand Prix Chess Championship and the hard work of Persatuan Catur Negeri Perak (PCNP) as well as other smaller clubs in organising chess tournaments and promoting the sport, Perak has produced two back-to-back National Closed Chess Champions (Men) in Fong Yit San (2014) and Aron Teh (2013).

This came after a drought of 38 years, when Chan Swee Loon, the current President of PCNP, emerged victorious in 1975.
