1. our guide, Osman, explaining the area to us

Participants of the 2nd Terengganu International Squid Jigging Festival 2015 had the opportunity to watch and experience for themselves mussel picking in Setiu River, Kampung Mangkuk.

2. cruising Terengganu River in search of the sweet spot for clams

Transporting us in speedboats to the estuary of the river (muara Kuala Baru), we were encouraged to get into the water barefooted to feel the riverbed for mussels (or clams).

These freshwater clams are bred naturally and can only be collected from late April to early August annually.

This activity is not only carried out here in Kampung Mangkuk, but also in any other river mouth in Kuala Terengganu.

Although from these photos it may look like an easy task, it is actually backbreaking. Imagine collecting clams for a living under the scorching sun daily.

I’m not sure how much these mussels are sold at the market. I’ll bear in mind not to negotiate about the price with the vendors in future!
