Perak once again hosted the central zone tournaments for weightlifting, archery, sepak takraw, shooting, boxing, as well as track and field, for the selection of young athletes for the sports development programme (Program Pelapis) by the National Sports Council (NSC).

A total of 58 lifters took part in the weightlifting tournament; only five of them were girls. Besides the host, participants came from Selangor, Federal Territory and Putrajaya.

Many of these young lifters were participating in a tournament for the first time, and therefore, apart from it being a selection process to be recruited into the development programme, and be chosen to represent Perak at the national level, it also exposed them to a competitive environment, very much different and tensed up compared to their regular training ground.

There were two events (snatch and clean & jerk) and four weight categories, namely 45kg, 50kg, 56kg and above 56kg. All the children who participated were below 15 years old.

Three referees were tasked to judge on a lifter’s performance, either by raising the red or white flag. If two out of three flags are red, it means “No lift”, while lifters who obtained at least two white flags successfully proceed to the next weight level. The red or white flag is raised not solely based on the ability to lift the stipulated weight, but also on the technique of the lifter.

The technique of lifting a massive amount of weight is to pull it as close to the body as possible, as one would be fighting against gravity, although strength is fundamental. Moreover, a lifter has to build up his or her bone marrow. Lifters spend most of the time training on technique and to maintain a good position during every lift. This is where a capable coach is essential.
