If you follow my social media accounts, you would notice the many photos of curry noodles that I have shared. The reason is that I am on a quest to search for the best Ipoh curry noodles.

I have yet to find “the one”, although I do have my top five finalists. While exchanging notes with a fellow foodie on Ipoh eateries, he mentioned Sun Heng, a coffee shop in Canning Garden.

Ah, it has been a long time since I had curry noodles for breakfast at this particular stall in Sun Heng. So, what else but to make a trip there one bright morning to rediscover this gem in my own backyard?

I remember growing up on the curry noodles of Auntie Foong, alternating with Canning Garden Chee Cheong Fun, located at the end of the same block of shops.

Although Auntie Foong’s curry noodle business has been taken over by her two daughters, the curry prepared is still as pungent and scalp-sweat inducing.

Select your noodles from hor fun to yellow mee, and just have it topped with any choice of meat: chicken strips, char siew (Chinese BBQ pork) and roast pork. I like mine with all these meat options in one go.

If curry mee with a dollop of chilli boh is too hot and spicy for you to handle early in the morning, go for Chicken Hor Fun with clear broth soup instead. Don’t forget to add on your breakfast with a variety of fried yong liew, at only RM1 per piece.

Kedai Kopi dan Restoran Sun Heng is an old-school coffee shop, where its patrons are mainly Canning Garden residents out for morning tea with their neighbours.

Do take note that this curry noodles stall opens at 7am daily and closes when stocks run out. Rest days are on Thursday and Friday, first week of every month.
