Gopeng Heritage House, Perak
Gopeng Heritage House, which was officiated by Tourism Minister YB Dato Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen on 17th April, 2011 to coincide with World Heritage Day, belongs to the Muzium Gopeng co-founder, treasurer and main contributor, Wong Kuan Cheong. You can say that Gopeng Heritage House, which is located within walking distance from Muzium Gopeng, is an extension of the museum. Indeed, both properties, which are privately run, are managed by the same team of people.
According to co-founder, secretary and curator of the museum, Mr. Phang, whom I met when I visited Gopeng Heritage House on Saturday, the setting in Heritage House is like a home of the wealthy. Therefore, you can find in it a living room, bedrooms, kitchen and a bar.
Apart from experiencing the settings of a wealthy family mansion of the old days, there are rooms set up to display old business establishments like the barber shop, nightclub and kopitiam (coffee shop). It ought to be a nostalgic visit for those born before the Second World War.
Compared to Muzium Gopeng, which is smaller but academically interesting, there are more things to see in Heritage House, though some of the displays overlap. Even though I didn’t scrutinize every single item on display, I spent more than an hour at Heritage House. Let me share some of the photos I took during my visit to Heritage House in Gopeng.
