I met a young lady at Puspakom the other day. Remember I was made to wait for almost three hours? I had plenty of time to chit-chat with people who were in the queue together with me. This young lady accompanied her mother who had to get her car inspected. She was reading a booklet on Highway Code (Undang-Undang Jalan Raya). She said that she still hasn’t applied for her driver’s license yet even though she is “old”, unlike her friends who all took theirs as soon as they turned 17.

According to her, she tried taking the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicle) written test when she was studying in the United States but gave up because the handbook is so thick, over a hundred pages long, she didn’t have time to read through and absorb everything. Seriously, ours is so simple compared to theirs! Yet, if I were to take my written test now, I would still feel jittery. LOL I’m hopeless….

Well, she didn’t have to delay getting her driver’s license if she knew of a slimmed-down DMV study guide which only provides essential information required to pass the written test. This isn’t to say that information in the driver license manual isn’t important but it’s too long-winded. Don’t you agree?

I got to know about The Buddies Society of Ipoh, Malaysia, when I visited University Kuala Lumpur Royal College of Medicine Perak (UniKL RCMP) Open Day a couple of days ago. The Buddies Society of Ipoh, an NGO that is supported by the Malaysian AIDS Council based in Ipoh and registered with the Registrar of Societies in 2004, offers support for People Living With HIV / AIDS (PLWHAs), their partners, families and friends.

Well, I’ve never heard of them before but now that I have, let me do my part in promoting the good that they are doing.

What kind of help can one get from the “Buddies”?
* More information about HIV / AIDS
* A sympathetic ear
* Talk to another person with HIV / AIDS
* Supportive “buddies”

What do the “Buddies” do?
* Provide emotional and psychological support
* Provide social support and friendship
* Connecting people
* Provide practical support like home visits, transportation to hospitals, etc.
* Help access financial assistance from relevant authorities

The Buddies Society of Ipoh actively educates the public on how HIV is transmitted. I’d like to share the information here on my blog.

HIV CAN be transmitted:
* through unsafe (without the use of latex condoms) sexual practices.
* through sharing of needles or injecting equipment.
* from an infected mother to her baby during pregnancy, birth or breastfeeding.

HIV CANNOT be transmitted through:
* donating blood.
* body contact like shaking hands or hugging.
* sharing public amenities such as telephones, swimming pools and toilets.
* sharing food and utensils.
* sharing living, working, studying, sleeping space.
* sneezes, coughs, sweat or urine.
* insect or animal bites.
* caring for someone with HIV / AIDS.

Chance To Make Money Inside

I was in another part of town just now and spotted this notice sticking on the glass door panel of a shop. It screams of a chance to make money inside and of course that took my attention. In small print at the top, it also says, “Everydays every customer come 1st top up $50 free $10″.

It looks like one could make money by playing 9 Dragon, 888, 232 and other net games. Now, I would say that I am quite net savvy and also play a lot of games online but have never heard of such internet games like 888 and 232 before. Me thinks this is one of those cyber cafe-like gambling dens that we read so much about in the papers.

I thought this is illegal but this shop operated so openly. Anyway, it’s a moot point since the shop is vacant now. It looks like they have folded. Or maybe they’ve just moved somewhere else.
