Last week, Sunway Medical Centre (SunMed) kicked off the 30 Days To Happy Kidneys Campaign, in conjunction with their World Diabetes Day celebration with the theme “Eliminate Diabetes”.

The campaign, in collaboration with the National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia (NKF), strives to increase awareness on caring for the kidneys and reducing the incidence of diabetes as well as aims to raise funds to benefit NKF.

In Malaysia, it has been found that new patients of kidney failure are in the age band of 50 to 65 who are suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

As it generally takes ten to twenty years of uncontrolled diabetes or high blood pressure to cause irreversible damage to the kidney(s), this statistic reflects a poor management of chronic diseases.

The preferred treatment for kidney failure patients is kidney transplant. Unfortunately, due to the relatively low number of suitable donors, kidney transplants are only performed on about sixty patients on the average per year in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, in a study conducted in 2014, the International Diabetes Federation indicated that of the estimated 3.2 million people living with diabetes in Malaysia, approximately 50% of them remain undiagnosed and the total number of diabetics is expected to rise by another 50% by 2035.

About NKF
Each kidney failure patient has to undergo three dialysis sessions every week for life, unless a kidney transplant is successfully done. NKF helps over 1,600 patients annually, spending close to RM15 million a year in subsidies for patients for their dialysis sessions.

Additionally, total operational costs for NKF are approximately RM30 million a year, including running 27 centres nationwide, expenses for public education programmes, welfare contributions for hardcore poor patients and their dependents, professional training for personnel, transportation for patients and replacement of equipment.

Some 60% of NKF patients are hardcore poor with household disposable income of less than RM800 per month, while the other patients also fall into the low-income category.

Moreover, in 2015, NKF replaced four reverse osmosis water treatment systems at RM120,000 each, ten dialysis machines costing RM45,000 each and twenty units of other dialysis-related machines such as dialyser reprocessors or artificial kidney machines costing RM32,000 each.

Raising Funds for NKF
The 30 Days to Happy Kidneys campaign aims to get Malaysians to commit to take better care of their kidneys by taking up the 30 Days to Happy Kidneys Challenge. The challenge features a 30-day calendar with a different daily activity that prompts calendar owners to learn about kidney health and adopt healthy kidney practices.

Members of the public who donate a sum of RM11 or more will receive a 30 Days to Happy Kidneys Challenge pledge card incorporating the calendar. Each card has a unique serial number, which means that one person can own multiple pledge cards.

The fundraising period is from October 12, 2015 to January 17, 2016. At the end of the period, SunMed will make a donation to NKF matching the amount of funds raised from the public.

The cumulative donation is to support NKF in running dialysis sessions and cover other operating costs.

30 Days to Happy Kidneys Challenge
Everyone is encouraged to take up the challenge by performing the activity indicated on the calendar.

Take a creative photo of yourself doing each activity and upload it to Instagram, accompanied by a positive message. Include the unique serial number found on your pledge card on your photo as well as tag it with #30daystohappykidneys and @sunwaymedical. You may submit as many photos as you like as you can win more than once.

Five mystery prizes will be given out weekly to participants whose photos have garnered the highest number of likes.

The last day of the contest is November 15, 2015 to match Sunway Medical Centre’s World Diabetes Day celebration on November 14 at Sunway Pyramid.
