The Perak state-level Chinese New Year open house was once again hosted at the official residence of Perak Menteri Besar (Chief Minister), on the first day of the Chinese Lunar New Year. It was an explosive kick-off to the Year of the Dragon. While last year we had superstar Dato’ Michelle Yeoh joining us, this year, we have DYMM Sultan of Perak Sultan Azlan Shah and other royals celebrating with us.

This celebration has been extra meaningful for me as I was able to share the uniqueness of “open house” with my foreign friends. Open house is a custom unique to Malaysia that is not found anywhere in the world. This is an opportunity for the rulers of the state and other state leaders to mingle with the public, and for the people to socialise; irrespective of race, religion, creed or colour. It is a great platform to foster unity.

Besides delectable local delicacies served on the house, there was also non-stop entertainment enjoyed by one and all, for a total of five hours!
